ID Badges

Does anyone know anything about ID badges?

I'm the design editor for my school newspaper. My instructor has given me the task of making press passes for the class (ID badges) so that we can leave campus during school. I have been trying to figure out what size to make them on indesign and nothing i do looks right does anyone know the right dimensions? also does anyone know where I could possibly get high quality, glossy ones printed and how much that would cost? I understand how to make them, I need the dimensions

1. Just print them out on a sheet of A4 using MS publisher, cut them using a paper trimmer and have them laminated. Use a classic font (I'd go for Helvetica - that's what all good designers use) and make them clear enough to read without getting too close. Use light grey and a pastel colour - that always looks good. Oh, and make them about the size of a credit card.
