Does a legally adopted child qualify for Tricare and a military ID Card?

My husband is going to legally adopt my son who is 11. Would that make him eligible for the militarys Tricare program and a Military ID card? He is US Army retired. Thanks!

  1. Yes.
  2. Yes the adopted son, will be eligible for all programs. God bless your husband
  3. Yes. When your husband goes to the personnel office to register your son in DEERS, just provide them with a copy of the adoption certificate and they'll be good to go. They'll take your son's picture and issue him a dependant ID card. Your husband will then need to talk to the TriCare admin group to ensure he is covered as part of your family care plan.
  4. A legally adopted child qualified for anything a natural born child is.
  5. He will be eligible. He's probably eligible now--stepchildren are eligible. Call your local tricare office and the local DEERs office to get him his ID. It will just change from "Stepchild" to "Child" on the annotation of relationship to sponsor.
  6. Absolutly. Once he is in the system, the Military looks at him just like he was a natural born son
  7. Yep. And when he gets older... he'll also be applicable for other things because the proceedings happened before he was 15.
  8. yes. in fact as long as your child resides with the servicemember at least 51% of the time he doesn't even need to adopt him.
