What do hotels and banks do with you Identification card?

They take it and then make a copy of it. Why do they do that? But what about the hotels that you have to pre pay.

3. just incase you don't pay for your room or if you trash it and don't pay.
4. So the employees can steal your identity....don't give it to anybody...ever.
